metal and cloth

Last night I dreamt that I met Judith Butler on my way to wander around a flea market. I've been reading a lot about desirability politics before bed and Judith must have had something to say on the matter. I wasn’t looking for anything in particular at the flea market. Browsing shoe boxes of old earrings which left my hands smelling of unworn metal. Sifting through unframed artwork and modern but old modern so now vintage slim status of cats. Everything was very muted in tone. Dull. Unexcitable. No rhinestones, disco balls, or neon. It was graham crackers without the chocolate or marshmallows. A medley of waiting room carpet colors until I came to a table with crocheted puppets. Two crocheted puppets to be exact. The woman said no one had stopped at her table all day. A few looked on with curiosity but kept their distance. Some pointed and laughed. Others looked on with repulsion. The puppets were cute and grotesque. Giant eyes that were monstrously disproportionate to their bodies. Veiny little arms. Tiny lips for whispering secrets. I loved them.

How much?

  1. This post seems in keeping with your Thesis! Use it?

And then it reminded me of this poet; did I already tell you that you might like her?

The planet of spiderweb created when I rub my fingers against
    each other
and the planets of spiderweb created when everyone rubs everyone's
    are uniform.

We hand each other planets and spiderwebs in caring and non-caring
tethered to larger and larger webs of caring and non-caring.

We catch fish, while life rides off
    between our fingers.

    Like women riding men.

  2. "...left my hands smelling of unworn metal." Yes! That smell stays with you; I can smell it now. I have jewelry that smells like that, which I could easily wash, but instead, I choose to ignore. Also, I’m picturing those slim cat statues as bowling pins, but, ones that stare at you as you walk by.
