--that is: an utterance (expression/bit of language/gesture) can only occur once there is a position(ality)--and this morning, drinking coffee and thinking about some things i wanted to say about getting dressed/having outfits, it seems to fit . . .
1. jeffrey o'malley (emily: he's mine and kat's mutual friend/acquaintance at school, and also a quite fabulous (of the muted variety) and intentional dresser) told me once that on his morning train rides to evanston for a job he would look at the way wealthier office people were dressed and he became a bit disillusioned with their way of adorning because it looked so expensive, and he said: "it felt like they were having a conversation with each other through their clothes that i could not follow."
2. kat you said, right after the online times ended and we returned to school in masks that you'd missed dressing, so as to be "part of the landscape."
3. it's a stupid question that i feel like late night talk shows would ask of women, but: for whom do you dress?
That is a fantastic question. I have a friend who reminds me of parts of my life when I lived in less urban areas. She dresses casually most of the time valuing comfort and functionality above trends. For several years, she has been getting beautiful gray strands that shine against her black hair. During one of our more recent phone conversations, she informed me she is challenging herself not to look in any mirrors for x amount of time as a test for herself and her "self".
